World’s Longest Trail

The Trans Canada Trail is the world’s longest network of trails, developed and promoted by a nonprofit, registered charity.

When completed, the Trail will stretch over 23,000 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic Oceans, linking 1,000 communities and all Canadians. Today, more than 16,800 kilometres of trail have been developed. Millions of Canadians and international visitors are using the Trail to hike, cycle, ski, horseback ride, canoe and snowmobile. The Trans Canada Trail offers countless opportunities to explore Canada’s diverse landscapes and rich history.

The Trans Canada Trail is made up of close to 400 individual trails,each with unique and varied features. This contributes to the diversity and grandeur of Canada’s National Trail. For day trips or multi-day adventures, the Trail offers countless opportunities to explore and discover.

The TC Trail crosses through Yellowhead Highway areas such as Edmonton, Alta., North Battleford, Saskatoon, Regina and Rossburn, Sask., and Winnipeg, Man.

World-Famous RCMP Musical Ride

Perhaps the most recognized and respected Canadian icon is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police attired in their red serge dress uniform astride a gleaming black horse. Now imagine the pageantry of 32 trained riders in red serge performing an intricately patterned musical ride!

Winnipeg Launches New Airport

Canada’s newest airport is also the greenest. The James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, located in Winnipeg, officially welcomed its first passengers at the end of October. World-class design, contemporary restaurant and shopping options, as well as a host of modern travelling conveniences, make the new terminal an impressive welcome to the prairie province.

Floor-to-ceiling glass panes on the second-storey departure level provide a nearly 360-degree view of Manitoba’s signature skies and Winnipeg’s skyline. Transparent boarding bridges mean natural light embraces jetlagged and weary travellers soon after they step off the airplane. A constellation of 55 skylights in the arrival area is the ‘wow factor’ design feature all travellers are drawn to. All in all, it’s a noticeable departure from the modernist architectural style of the old terminal built in 1964.

Master architect of the new terminal was Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects. They are the creative visionaries behind iconic international landmarks such as the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and International Finance Centre in Hong Kong.

The Churches of Lamont County

Lamont

Architecturally stunning and a symbol of stability in a new land, the churches of Lamont County have long been the pride of the communities.

In Lamont County, there are more churches per capita than anywhere in North America. This county has a proud legacy as the birthplace of the oldest and largest agricultural settlement of Ukrainians in Canada. As more and more newcomers from Europe made East Central Alberta their home, Lamont County experienced a remarkable church-building boom expressive of their deep Christian faith.

This rich spiritual heritage is still very much in evidence today, in the numerous churches that can be found throughout this municipality.

North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site of Canada

Port Edward

The North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site is a 19th and 20th century salmon cannery complex, located in the community of Port Edward, just south of the city of Prince Rupert, B.C.


The cannery complex is situated on a narrow strip of land between the mountains and the Inverness Passage, at the mouth of the Skeena River and is comprised of a cluster of wooden buildings, mostly one-storey in height, grouped along a wooden boardwalk. The boardwalk and many of the buildings are supported on piers over the water. The site is now operated as a cannery museum.

The North Pacific Cannery was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1985, commemorating the history and contributions of European, Asian and First Nations communities related to the development of the West Coast fishing industry and the industrial development of Canada.


The new funding will ensure the preservation of Port Edward’s treasured national historic site and will foster increased understanding and appreciation of those who contributed to the development of the West Coast fishing industry while continuing to support local tourism.

New Exhibit at Batoche National Historic Site

Batoche Historical Site has unveiled the new interpretive exhibit at Batoche National Historic Site of Canada. The new exhibit provides a more up to date presentation of the historical messages while providing a more flexible space for future programming.

Recent improvements include new interpretive panels, space for temporary exhibits and multimedia enhancements such as historic images projected onto the walls of the Grand Hallway of the visitor centre. With the existing space updated and additional space added for temporary exhibits, the centre will allow for more varied and flexible programming at Batoche National Historic Site.

Batoche was declared a National Historic Site in 1923 by the federal government. Batoche also commemorates the history of the Metis community of Batoche, home of Metis culture and heritage. Surviving portions of the Carlton Trail and river-lot system and the roles of First Nations in the Northwest Resistance are also commemorated.

Gold!

Barkerville

The Barkerville National Historic Site was the epicentre of the 1800s Cariboo Gold Rush and it is here that visitors can step back in time to experience the heady days of striking it rich.

The historic town was founded 151 years ago in 1862 after the discovery of significant gold deposits in the Cariboo gold fields. Today Barkerville is a lively, thriving summer town, complete with stagecoach rides, live theatre, costumed interpreters and a vibrant atmosphere whisking visitors back to the gold rush days. Barkerville is also the site of major gold panning competitions.

The historic site is located 80 kilometres east of Quesnel.

$20 Million Picasso Prints in Saskatoon

Saskatoon

The Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation donated an exceptional collection of 405 Picasso prints to the Remai Gallery. This Picasso linocut collection, valued at $20 million, doubles the value of the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Slated to open in 2015, the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan will be the largest art gallery in the province, bringing world-class national and international exhibitions to Saskatoon and celebrating Western Canada’s contribution to the visual arts world.

“The Remai Gallery is privileged to receive a virtually complete collection of linocuts, produced by Pablo Picasso,” said the Gallery’s Chief Curator, Lisa Baldissera. “The editioned prints, experimental proofs, and working states comprise what is the largest, and arguably the finest, collection of Picasso linocuts in the world.”A gallery space on the third floor, The Picasso Salon: International Modern Art, will be dedicated to the Picasso gift and works of international modernity. The gift of the Picasso collection follows the Foundation’s 2011 donation of $30 million to the Gallery, directed towards the construction of the facility, and enhanced programming over the next 30 years.

“I want to put the Gallery on the international stage,” said Ellen Remai, an entrepreneur and noted philanthropist.
